Description

The Dolphin Inn is an 18th-century inn located on High Street, with a 19th-century extension. It is constructed from local lias stone that has been cut and squared, with flat stone dressings. The roofs are made of Welsh slate and feature plain gables, along with brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays plus an additional three bays from the extension.

The main block includes a plinth, string course, and eaves course, with rusticated quoins. It has sash windows set in keystoned architraves, with 16 panes in the first bay and the upper part of the third bay. The lower part of the third bay and the upper part of the second bay each have 12 panes, while the upper bay of the second is set in a segmental keystoned arch. The lower part of the second bay features a six-panel door within an architrave topped with a segmental pediment on console brackets. A hanging sign is displayed across the upper centre window on an elaborate wrought-iron bracket.

The extension has a plinth and sash windows in plain openings, with 16 panes above and 12 panes below, including two windows in each outer lower bay and a plain central doorway. The interior has not been seen. The inn was already open by 1859, according to the Victoria County History.
