Description
The public weighbridge, located in Market Place, was built between 1870 and 1880. It features cast and wrought iron machinery housed in an early 20th-century timber shed. The weighbridge includes standard weighing plates set into the road, measuring approximately 2.5 by 6 metres overall. The balance and machinery are situated within a low timber-clad shed that has vertical painted boarding and a felted monopitch roof. There is an 8-pane long low window along the southeast side and a very low door on the west side. The machinery was supplied by E and A Ashworth Ltd., based in Dewsbury and London. The weighbridge was installed shortly after 1870 by Ilchester Corporation, which relied on it and town hall lettings for most of its income by 1888. It appears to be currently operated by a private firm.
