Description

Clare Farmhouse is an 18th-century farmhouse located in Charlton Horethorne. It is constructed from local stone that has been cut and squared, with Ham stone ashlar dressings and a plain clay tile roof over stone slate base courses, featuring coped gables and brick end chimney stacks. The building has a 'T'-plan and has been significantly extended at the rear.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of four bays. It has a plinth, a through string course between the floors, and an eaves moulding. The windows are mostly three-light horizontal bar casements set beneath exposed timber lintels, except for the upper window in bay two. Bay three features a plain boarded door with a two-light fanlight above, which is sheltered by a moulded flat stone hood supported by shaped corbel brackets. Above this, there is a two-light casement window set into an architrave, with a moulded cill on brackets and a pediment above supported on console brackets. There is a matching projecting wing at the rear.

Inside, the farmhouse has stop-chamfered beams and run-out stops, along with two wide gable fireplaces that have been masked by early 20th-century insertions. The 19th-century stairs and doors remain, and the cheese room at the rear has seen very little alteration.
