Description

The Swayne Altar Tomb is located 1.5 metres east of the southeast corner of the chancel in the Church of Saint Mary. This altar tomb, dated 1827, is made of Portland stone and features a Ham stone vase. It has a square shape with a high plinth and square fielded panels on each side, which are capped with a cornice slab and a large urn finial. The tomb is surrounded by heavy cast iron railings set into a stone base. The railings have reeded corner pieces topped with urn finials, and they consist of thin square pointed railings alternating with round classical balusters. The tomb commemorates Mary Swayne, who died in 1827.
