Description
The Warne Monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 4 meters west of the south-west corner of the nave at the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the early 19th century and is made of stone. The tomb features a low pyramid top with a step to the lid that has a moulded edge. It has a fluted frieze, with the fluting stopped by corner cubes that contain paterae made from a different stone. The corner pieces are designed with large, fluted chamfers that are swept out at the top and bottom to form a square shape. The sides of the monument have wide, sunk panels framed by a line. The plinth has a chamfered top and a square base, raised above the path on additional stone facing. The monument includes some italic script and commemorates Thomas Warne, who died in 1836, and Elizabeth Tomkins, who died in the 1820s.
