Description

No 20 on Church Street is a house and shop dating from the early 18th century. It features Flemish-bond brickwork, painted on the front, set on a stone plinth, with a tiled roof. The building is three windows wide, with 3½ storeys on the left side and 2 storeys on the right. It is constructed as one unit, with continuous eaves and a roofline.

On the left side, there is a 2-light mullion and transom window with a steep segmental head, a brick-on-end arch, and a projecting stone keystone, along with an iron opening light. To the right, the entrance consists of a 6-panel front door, with the upper panels fielded and the bottom two flush, featuring an iron knocker. The door has plain reveals and a moulded surround, flanked by thin, panelled pilasters that support consoles and a fluted frieze. Above the door is a projecting pediment with very small dentils underneath and along the slope.

The shop front to the right is framed by plain pilasters that carry consoles. The left side of the shop front has a 4-panel door with flush panels and a single-pane fanlight above. The shop window is a single sheet with a low stallboard and three narrow panes above, topped by a plain fascia under a projecting top.

Above the shop, on the left, there is a window similar to the ground floor, with a 2-light casement window above it, featuring a head like the one below but with a brick-on-edge arch. On the right side, there are two sash windows at the same height, with flat heads and rubbed-brick arches that have projecting stone keystones. The eaves are finished with a wooden fascia.

On the left gable, there is a gabled dormer with a 2-light casement window that has a cambered head and an iron opening light. The building has a brick chimney on the left gable, positioned behind the ridge, and another external stack on the right in front of the ridge.
