Description
Nos 17 and 19 Church Street is a house and betting office dating from the early 18th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a tiled roof, with an 'L' plan layout. The building is two storeys high with attics and has five windows across the front. There is a plain plinth, and on the left side, a half-glazed door is accessed by two stone steps, topped with a flat projecting head and a rubbed brick arch. To the right of the door, there are two sash windows with wide glazing bars and a rubbed brick arch above each. The door area includes six fielded panels and a three-pane rectangular fanlight with a moulded surround and a flat projecting hood supported by shaped brackets. The first floor mirrors the ground floor with five windows, though the gap between the first and second windows is wider than the others. The eaves are supported by shaped brackets, and there are three hipped dormers with two-light casement windows.
On the right return gable, there is a single-storey canted bay set towards the rear, featuring French doors at the end and sash windows on the splays, all under a hipped, slated roof. A plain string course runs above this bay, with a blocked window above it, and another plain string course at eaves level, topped with stone copings on the parapet. A plain brick chimney rises from the rear eaves level, and the rear wing, which has dentil eaves, is timber-framed and visible from the yard. The interior has not been inspected.
