Description
The George Hotel, formerly an inn, dates from the late 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork with a rendered plinth and a slate roof. The building follows a āUā plan, with a front two rooms deep and four windows wide. To the left of the street frontage are two tripartite sash windows with rubbed brick arches and flush-panelled external shutters. Remnants of earlier rubbed brick arches are visible either side. Below is an elliptical brick head to a cellar opening on the left, alongside a flat headed opening on the right. An open carriageway on the right has a cambered brick arch with an iron-plated projecting stone keystone. To the right of the carriageway is a single-storey canted bay with four panes, a moulded cornice, and a flat roof. A plain stone string course sits below the first-floor sash windows, each with cambered rubbed-brick arches. To the right of centre are two projecting boards in a V shape, painted with the inn name and held by an iron stay. The second floor features four six-pane horizontal-pivoting casements. The building has molded timber eaves and chimneys on the ridge to the left of the carriageway and left gable.
