Description
The Hayward Chest Tomb, located in a railed enclosure north of the chancel at the Church of Saint Mary, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed from Ham stone and features 20th-century Portland stone inscription panels. The tomb has a stepped base and a high moulded plinth, with proudstanding panels in a single recess on each face, flanked by three fielded-panelled pilasters. The top is moderately thick and hipped. This tomb commemorates Jane Hayward, who died in 1805, along with various descendants. Surrounding the tomb is a paved area that includes four other non-listed tombs, bordered by a 150mm wide and high stone kerb. The enclosure is finished with 19th-century wrought iron railings topped with spear heads and occasional balusters featuring cast urn finials.
