Description

This milestone, located in Wincanton, dates from the early 19th century. It is made of Doulting stone and features a cast iron plaque. The pillar measures approximately 400 millimeters wide, 250 millimeters thick, and stands 1.1 meters high with a rounded top. The plaque, which is about 400 millimeters wide and 500 millimeters deep, has a shouldered semi-circular arched top and a double ogee bottom. It is inscribed with the words "Wincanton - on curve" and "1 Castle Cary 5" in incised lettering. This road has been maintained by the Wincanton Trust since 1756.
