Description

Old Court is a Grade II* listed building located on the north side of Mantle Street. Originally the seat of the Popham family in the 16th century, the structure suffered significant damage during the Civil War. The rear of the house features three rooms with coved ceilings, indicating they are part of an older structure, along with three historic stone chimneys. The front of the house was added in the early 19th century and consists of two storeys with four windows, finished in roughcast. The central section is taller and has a modillion cornice at the parapet. A glass conservatory with Gothic glazing bars extends across the front, and vases are placed at the corners. The roof is topped with a wrought iron bell turret. Inside, one of the older rooms showcases notable early 19th-century plasterwork and Gothic woodwork details. The property also includes gatepiers, gates, and railings, as well as a former coach house and garden wall, which together form a group with No 41 Fore Street.
