Description

Paxford House is a Grade II* listed building located in Blockley, dating back to 1729, as indicated by a rainwater head marked W.F. The house is a symmetrical small 'polite' residence that retains some vernacular features. It has two storeys and attics, constructed of ashlar stone. The front is topped with a Cotswold stone roof, while the rear has a concrete imitation stone tile roof. The building features coped verges and four ashlar chimneys, along with two gabled dormers.

The front facade includes five mullion and transom casement windows, with the ground floor being sand over and interrupted by a cornice above the central doorway, which contains a mid-19th century four-panelled door set in panelled reveals. The rear of the house is more irregular, showcasing a large stair-window with an arched tympanum that has key and impost blocks, alongside a 3-light mullion and transom window to the right. There is also a long and narrow transomed back stairs window on the east gable end.

To the southeast, there is a mid-19th century wing that is two storeys high and has a slate roof. This wing features four windows, with two lights and mullions on the first floor and two and three-light segment-headed windows on the ground floor, adorned with pineapple finials on the gables.

Inside, the house boasts a good oak staircase with two turned balusters per tread, carved tread ends, and a dado rail. There is evidence of significant alterations, particularly at the west end, although a corner fireplace has been retained on the first floor.
