Description
The Grey House is a 17th-century building that had its roof raised in the mid-19th century and was restored or remodeled in the early 20th century to feature mullion windows. It has two storeys with an attic that is lit from the gables and has a dormer on the south side. The structure is built of rubble in alternating thick and thin courses, particularly noticeable on the north side.
On the north elevation, there are three bays and one bay, with the right-hand section being a lower 2½ storey extension. The slate roof has coped verges and features square ashlar chimneys. The windows are ovolo mullion style with drips, consisting of three and four lights. A central gabled porch leads to a studded door, which originally came from Old Manor Cottages.
The south elevation has three bays, with the right-hand side featuring a gabled break and the left side containing a doorway. This doorway has ogee mouldings with vase stops, a 20th-century cornice, and a piece of strapwork, topped with a Tudor arch head that has panelled spandrels, likely also from the 20th century. There is a graffiti marking 'T.B.1773' on the left-hand jamb.
Inside, the house boasts a good interior with imported Jacobean panelling in the central room and chamfered beams with ogee steps. The south-east room features a Tudor arch fireplace with vase stops. The mid-18th-century staircase to the north-east was remodeled in 1905 to resemble a 17th-century style by Mr. Warmington of Chipping Campden.
