Description
The gatepiers, gates, and railings at the right entry to No 1 Mantle Street are likely from the early 19th century. The gateway is positioned at a right angle to the road and is accessed via a cobbled forecourt in front of No 41 Fore Street. It features a pair of square wrought iron openwork gatepiers, which incorporate a circular motif and are topped with diagonal scrolls that support small urns. The double ironwork gates have tops that sweep up to meet the piers. Short sections of spear railings, which curve down in the middle, are attached to the left and right of the gatepiers. Original red brick piers are located at the outer ends of the railings. The gatepiers, gates, and railings at No 1, along with the former coach house and garden wall at No 1 and No 3, form a group with No 41 Fore Street.
