Description
The United Reformed Church, formerly known as the Congregational Church, was built in 1860, as indicated on the rainwater head on the northeast side. It is designed in a late 13th-century Gothic style and constructed from random sandstone and flint with ashlar dressings. The church features a steeply pitched slate roof with ridge cresting.
The main gable end facing the street is flanked by angle buttresses that have ashlar setoffs. Tall square ashlar pinnacles are positioned on either side of the main gable, which has a flattened apex topped with a metal finial and a cusped trefoil below. There are three large pointed windows that are linked to the buttresses by a weathered sill band. Each window consists of two lights with split cusps and cinquefoil oculi in the tracery above. The windows are adorned with hood moulds that have carved label stops, and the lights extend down to the sill band with blind tracery.
The church has paired pointed entrances featuring cusping under hood moulds with carved labels. The double doors are fitted with strapwork hinges and pierced trefoils. The east end of the church includes a miniature polygonal apse with a cusped oculus above. The attached Church Rooms at the rear are not included in the listing. The church is recognized for its contribution to the street scene, forming a group with the lamp standards, railings, steps, walls, the Three Cups Hotel, and No 34, along with Nos 2 to 6 (even) Mantle Street.
