Description

  1. 5365 FORE STEEET (South Side) United Reformed Church ST 1320 1/69 II GV 2. Formerly the Congregational Church. Dated 1860 on rainwater head on north east side. In late C13 Gothic style. Random sandstone and flint with ashlar dressings. Steeply pitched slate roof with ridge cresting. Main gable end to street is flanked by angle buttresses with ashlar setoffs. Tall square ashlar pinnacles flank the main gable wnich has flattened apex with metal finial. Cusped trefoil below. 3 large pointed windows linked to buttresses by weathered sillband. Windows of 2 lights each with split cusps and cinquefoil oculi in tracery above. Hood moulds with carved label stops. Lights extend with blind tracery down to sill band. Paired pointed entrances with cusping under hood moulds with carved labels. Double doors with strapwork hinges and pierced trefoils. East end of church has a miniature polygonal apse with cusped oculus above. Attached Church Rooms to rear are not included. Church is included for its contribution to street scene.

United Reformed Church with lamp standards, railings, steps and walls and the Three Cups Hotel and No 34 form a group together with Nos 2 to 6 (even) Mantle Street.
