Description
The Former Squirrel Hotel is an important inn that has been in existence since at least 1686 and is the only remaining inn of its age in the area. The Squirrel was the emblem of the Bluetts family from Holcombe Rogus, Devon, who were prominent in the 17th century. The front range of the building is the original structure, although it has undergone significant alterations. It features a long, two-storey roughcast front with slate roofs that sweep at the eaves. There is a brick parapet on the right gable end and red brick stacks.
The façade includes three windows on the higher left section, three central three-light windows, and three widely spaced windows on the right. All windows are sashes with thin glazing bars. The ground floor has a variety of bay windows and porches, although all openings were blocked at the time of the survey in 1975. There is a splayed bay under a cornice on the left end, and the doorway is framed by a porch with a segmental curved hood, a keystone, and octagonal columns, featuring a ball motif on the cornice. The central section has a second splayed bay and a combined porch and bay window under a cornice. Above the entrance, there is a round-headed lunette flanked by pilasters, and a third porch is located at the right end, also with a segmental curved hood, a keystone, and a ball motif on the cornice.
