Description

The Howard Arms Hotel is a hotel that was formerly a coaching inn, dating from the late 18th century. It features incised painted stucco, a chamfered plinth, flush quoins, stone dressings, and a slate roof with projecting eaves, along with yellow brick chimney stacks. The building stands three storeys high and has two bays. The entrance includes 20th-century panelled doors with a plain surround and a projecting wooden hood porch. The tripartite sash windows, which have glazing bars, are framed by painted stone surrounds, and each window is flanked by 20th-century louvred shutters. Above the entrance, there is a carved inn sign depicting a bunch of grapes, likely from the late 18th or early 19th century.

The listing also includes a three-storey, three-bay extension at the rear, known as The Snooty Fox, which has an arched carriage passage, a 20th-century recessed entrance, sash windows with glazing bars, and plain stone surrounds. The listing does not cover the significantly altered stable block that encloses the stable yard to the right. Historical references include an advertisement in the Cumberland Pacquet from 21 May 1793, and it is noted that Richard Smirke, an architectural draughtsman and watercolourist who lived from 1778 to 1815 and was the brother of Sir Robert Smirke, died here, as mentioned in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1815.
