Description

Jobson's Chemists and Midland Bank is a chemist shop, bank, and bank offices built in 1883 by C.J. Ferguson for the Cumberland Union Banking Company. The building is constructed of snecked red sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and stone chimney stacks. It is designed as a single structure but is divided into two units, projecting into the street and separating Market Place from Front Street.

The chemists section has three storeys and three bays, featuring large round-headed shop windows on the front and side with partial glazing bars and a moulded surround. There is a round-headed six-panel door with two round-headed lights and a triangular moulded pediment that provides access to the offices above. The sash windows have partial glazing bars, and the building includes a moulded plinth, string courses, and a shaped gable.

The Midland Bank section also has three storeys and three bays. Its sash windows, which have partial glazing bars, are framed by moulded architraves and cornices, with projecting sills, console brackets, and aprons. The dentilled moulded cornice features segmental and triangular pedimented dormers, with sash windows that have glazing bars and moulded surrounds. The entrance facade facing Front Street includes a porch with half-reeded pilasters, a rounded hood with recessed moulded panels, and a moulded entablature and cornice, topped with a wrought-iron balcony. The shaped gable is adorned with ball finials. The bank offices extend to the right at a right angle, featuring another entrance with a shouldered surround, pilaster strips, scrolled console brackets, and a triangular pediment. The upper floor windows have two segmental pediments and are sashes with partial glazing bars.
