Description
No 4 Market Place is a doctor's surgery, likely formerly a bank or offices, dating from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of ashlar and dressed calciferous sandstone, featuring a moulded and dentilled cornice and polished granite dressings. It has a graduated green slate roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles, coped gables with kneelers, and stone chimney stacks. The structure is 2½ storeys high and consists of four bays.
The entrance is framed by a moulded surround with short Shap Granite columns and a round head topped with a shaped hood-mould. The ground floor has 20th-century casement windows that feature chamfered and moulded surrounds, central granite columns, and square hood-moulds. On the upper floor, there are double single-pane sash windows with flat heads set in pointed arch niches, also supported by central granite columns. A gabled dormer showcases tripartite lancets with an arched surround.
