Description
B. Warwick Sporting Shop and Milburn and Son is a building that dates from the mid-18th century and was originally constructed as houses. It features Flemish bond brickwork with grey headers, raised quoins on the left, chamfered quoins at the central angle, and flush quoins on the right. The roof is made of Welsh slate with tiled hips on the right side. The structure has three storeys and consists of three bays on the left and a projecting section with two bays on the right. The ground floor has 20th-century shop windows and doors. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars, including single-pane sashes on the right, all of which have moulded stone sills and round arches with keystones. This building, known as The Barracks, served as quarters for Scottish troops supporting Bonnie Prince Charlie during the siege of Carlisle from November 12 to 18, 1745; Prince Charlie himself stayed in the adjacent house. The building is clearly marked on a map from 1777.
