Description
The White Lion Hotel is a building that likely began as two houses in the early 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. It features painted incised stucco walls and stone dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has a tile ridge and gabled dormers adorned with bargeboards and finials. The building has yellow brick chimney stacks and stands three storeys tall with five bays. The 19th-century entrance consists of a four-panel door with a plain surround and a moulded cornice, while a blocked entrance can be seen between the windows on the left. The windows have been replaced with casements that include glazing bars and have plain stone surrounds. It is believed that the building was originally two storeys high and was raised, with window alterations occurring in the mid-19th century. The establishment was known as The White Lion in 1790, as noted in the Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society.
