Description

This is a late 17th-century shop with a flat above, which has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is stuccoed with stone dressings and quoins, and has a Welsh slate roof with coped gables, kneelers, and brick chimney stacks. It is two storeys high, originally with three bays, but now appears to have been reduced. The entrance has a quoined surround with a round head and is flanked by large 20th-century shop windows. The upper floor has two-pane sashes with painted stone surrounds, with filled windows above covered by stucco. A two-storey, two-bay extension to the left has a 20th-century shop window and single-pane sashes above. A wall plaque indicates that Bonnie Prince Charlie established his headquarters here during the siege of Carlisle from November 12th to 18th 1745.
