Description

The Charmouth House Hotel, originally an inn and later a private house, dates to around the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has stone walls, plastered, and a thatched roof, which is hipped at the east end and gabled at the west end, with a stone coping. There are three stacks; two at the east end eaves (rendered), one on the central ridge, and one at the west gable end. The building comprises a main range along the street with two return wings to the south, one at each end. The north elevation features two storeys and six windows. The three western bays have wooden casements with renewed cross-transoms, while the three eastern bays have windows with glazing bars. The front wall projects forward by approximately 4 feet in the three western bays. A wooden front door, with six panels (four glazed), is set within a fluted pilaster doorcase and sheltered by a plastic thatched canopy. The west return wing has a curved and washed coursed rubble stone wall and a hipped thatched roof with two brick stacks on the ridge. It contains two small sliding sash windows, a cellar door with a two-leaf design and a heavy wooden lintel. The east return wing has two storeys, five windows, and 19th-century sash windows, with three rendered stacks along the eaves, one projecting close to the street. A 20th-century door is located at the centre. Inside, the present hall has ceiling beams, originally hollow-chamfered and roll-moulded to create large compartments. Extensive flagstone floors are found at the western end.
