Description
The Moulin Hotel is an early 18th-century building, with significant remodelling and extensions occurring later. A further wing was added in 1971, and alterations have been made to the rear. It is situated in an irregular terrace on the south side, forming an L-shaped block with a partially angled entrance bay.
The east-facing principal elevation features an entrance bay set in a re-entrant angle to the right. This bay has rustic pillars flanking a panelled timber door, with narrow lights on either side. Above is a corniced canopy forming a first-floor verandah, supported by four similar pillars, and containing a jettied attic window with tabbed margins and decorative horseshoe bargeboarding to a jerkinhead roof. To the right is an advanced gabled bay, containing the oldest part of the building, with a decorative ironwork bracket and hanging sign at first-floor level. Five regularly fenestrated bays extend to the left, with a deep-set pointed-arch timber door and a pedimented, rusticated porch inscribed with the dates '1695' and 'MOULIN INN'. Dormer windows break the eaves at the attic level, with two blinded on the left side. Recessed 19th-century bays are located to the left of the entrance, featuring two large windows on each floor. An advanced gable, added in 1971, sits to the left, also with two windows per floor and a small window in the gablehead. A bay to the far left has a window on each floor.
The north-facing elevation, along Baledmund Road, presents a near-symmetrical centre bay of two storeys and attic, with five openings on the ground floor (grouped 1-1-3), three regularly disposed windows on the first floor, and a wallhead stack centrally placed above, flanked by pedimented dormer windows. A lower bay extends to the outer left, with a window on each floor, a small window under a projecting catslide roof, and a door on the return to a raised platform with steps leading to a signboard. Flat-roofed dormer windows are located centrally and on the outer right. A low, single-storey bay is situated on the right, with two square openings near the centre (the one on the right is blocked), a window set to the left, and a hayloft opening with a boarded timber door above.
The rear elevation is irregular and altered, with a variety of elements, including a margined stair window to the left of centre.
Most windows on the principal elevation are timber sash and case with 12 panes, while others largely feature plate glass. The roof is covered in grey slates. The chimneys are constructed of coped rubble and ashlar, with cans. Projecting eaves feature plain bargeboarding.
Internally, the first floor of the original wing has boarded timber reveals. The 19th-century wing contains decorative plasterwork, a timber fireplace with tiled slips and shutters.
