Description

No 1 Hendford is a mid-19th century shop, likely always used for retail, and forms part of a larger department store. The building is made of colourwashed brick and features plain clay tiled roofs, with a brick chimney stack on the right side. The left half of the building is three stories high with two bays, designed to harmonize with the adjacent 25 High Street. The ground floor has modern shopfronts, while the first floor showcases segmental arched two-light casements with gauged brick arches and plain labels above. The second floor contains two double sash windows in plain openings, also with flat gauged brick arches. Brick pilasters flank the sides, featuring a string course above the second floor, panels in the pilasters, a thin cornice, and a brick parapet that conceals the roof.

The right half of the building is simpler, also three stories and two bays but at slightly lower levels. It has a modern ground floor shop front and late 20th-century windows in plain openings with flat gauged brick arches on the first floor. The second floor has two four-pane sash windows in similar openings. The interior has been significantly altered. This property is included for its group value, being located on a corner site and integral to other listed buildings, including Nos 24/25 High Street and Nos 3 and 5 Hendford.
