Description
The Mermaid Hotel is an inn with a shop, both of which have been in existence since at least 1770. The building features stone ashlar construction and a stone slate roof with coped gables and brick chimney stacks at each end, which have been renewed. It appears to have been built at the same time as Nos 1A and 1B.
On the left side, there is a wide opening with a bolection moulded round trefoil arch, complete with moulded imposts and a return of moulding down the jambs that resemble quasi-columns on a simple plinth. The old gate is still present. To the right, there is a 20th-century shopfront. Above the arch, a triple window has a plain surround and impost blocks; the central 9-pane sash features a round trefoil arched head with a non-radial toplight, while the side 6-pane sashes have depressed ogee arches. To the right, there are two 8-pane sashes in simple architraves, and above them is a cornice with hidden gutters behind.
Inside the archway, there is a porch that shows traces of brick nogging on a timber stud partition. The interior has been significantly altered at both floor levels, but some original doors and panelling remain, and the cellars have not changed much. There are early 20th-century extensions to the rear yard, which has a separate entrance to Princes Street. Notably, there are plates stating "Member of the Licensed Victuallers Defence League of England and Wales" on both entrance gates. A mortgage deed from 1770 is framed just inside the main entrance.
