Description
The Three Choughs Hotel is a hotel that has likely been a hostelry since the 18th century. It was refronted in 1845 and underwent further alterations later. The building is constructed of ribbon pointed squared local stone with ashlar quoins at the corners, topped with a Welsh slate roof that features coped tables and brick chimney stacks.
The entrance elevation consists of three storeys and seven bays. The central doorway, which is slightly recessed and accessed by three steps, has modern doors and is framed by a rusticated segmental archway. Above the doorway is a stone and cast iron balcony supported by stone brackets, along with a 20th-century portecochere. The plinth is now partially buried.
On the ground floor, there are sash windows with 16 fairly large panes, while the first-floor windows have 12 panes and the second-floor windows have 9 panes, all set within simple architraves. The central first-floor window is an exception, featuring French doors and topped with a flat hood supported by console brackets. The interior was not inspected. The hotel is situated on a prominent corner site, and the South Street elevation includes a tablet inscribed "C.M. 1724."
