Description

The Baptist Church, built in 1828/9 on the site of an earlier church from 1688, was substantially refronted and extended in 1868. The main facade is constructed of Ham stone ashlar, while the return along Petters’ Way is roughcast. The roof is covered with Welsh slate. The front is a three-bay design of two storeys, in a semi-classical style, with a deep plinth. A flight of twelve steps with wing walls leads to a recessed porch featuring a three-bay Doric portico in antis, incorporating console keystones and alternating stone colours; the central columns have Corinthian capitals. Single windows matching the portico flank the porch on both levels, with brackets supporting the cills at ground floor and recessed aprons to the first floor. A string course with shallow dentils runs along the facade, aligning with the porch, and a full dentilled cornice tops the building, finishing with a plain parapet. The return along Petters’ Way shows three bays, with quoins marking the extension of 1868. The interior was not inspected.
