Description

The Newnam Memorial Block is a hall and schoolrooms built in 1912. It is constructed from ham stone with ashlar detailing and random courses, featuring contrasting stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The design is classical but less severe than the main building from 1868, and it is set back slightly from it. The two-storey facade has five bays, with a deep plinth capped by a cill string, rusticated quoins, a string course at the first floor, and a cornice topped with a plain parapet.

The facade includes four bays of windows: the ground floor features 12-pane casements with semi-circular deadlights set in shouldered keystoned architraves, while the upper floor has shallower 12-pane sashes with radial semi-circular deadlights in shouldered architraves that extend below the cills. The fifth bay is distinguished by channelled pilasters framing a Doric doorway with panelled doors and a semi-circular fanlight above a channelled arch over the entablature. Above this is a semi-circular headed window with an apron and a bracketted open pedimented head, all topped by an open segmental pediment that incorporates a tablet reading 'Baptist Schools 1912'. The words "Newnam Memorial" are incised into the string band above the entrance doorway. The interior has not been inspected. This building represents the third phase of development on the Baptist Church site, serving as an enlargement to the Baptist Hall and Schoolrooms.
