Description

No. 9 High Town is a shop and dwelling, now functioning solely as a shop, dating from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of painted brick with a slate roof and features brick end stacks. It stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range, with late 19th-century plain sashes that have cambered heads and moulded brick architraves. These windows are set under brick arches supported by stone springers and keyblocks. The upper storey windows also have ornamented sills, and there is a moulded brick cornice with stops featuring grotesques. The early 20th-century shop front includes a central recessed entrance beneath a moulded ceiling panel, double doors with an overlight, and windows with clerestory lights in enriched cases. The shop front also has panelled soffits leading to a moulded fascia-board and hood.

Inside, there is a 20th-century staircase. On the second floor, there is a 19th-century four-panel door and fireplace, along with a truss that may date from the 17th century. The rafters are morticed to the purlins, and the roof was raised in the late 19th century. The first floor features architraves around the windows, exposed ceiling beams, and 18th-century English bond brickwork that is visible on the rear wall. The cellar has a part-glazed door, brick vaults, and a floor made of brick and flagstone, with some masonry present. This building is included for its group value.
