Description
The Entrance Gatehouse to the Market Hall in Hereford was built around 1860 by John Clayton. Constructed from ashlar, it features a tower with a through-passage, a semicircular arch, and pilasters adorned with vermiculation. The design includes a figure-head keyblock and a frieze with triglyphs. Above the arch, there are three niches with light and flanking figures, along with an armorial tablet beneath a moulded arch. The clock tower is supported by buttresses and has a bellcote topped with a weather-vane; the clock was made by J Smith & Sons from the Midland Steam Clock Works in Derby. Inside, the gatehouse has brick walls and plank doors set under flat arches on the sides, along with a screen that was altered in the 20th century, featuring an overlight with metal fanlight glazing.
