Description

No. 21 Woolston Road is a cottage with origins dating back to the 15th century. It is constructed from local stone that is roughly cut and squared, featuring large stones at the quoins. The cottage has a half-hipped thatched roof and brick chimney stacks. It follows a 'T' plan and stands two storeys high with a two-bay roadside elevation. The windows are timber casements, with two lights in bay 1 and three lights in bay 2, all set under timber lintels. The window in lower bay 1 has one half leaded, while the others have horizontal bars. Between the bays is a plain boarded door with a diamond-glazed light, also under a timber lintel. On the east gable, there is another leaded casement window on the ground floor. At the rear, there is a return wing of two bays, and between the bays, there is a blocked chamfered cambered-arched doorway.

The interior has not been seen, but it is reported to contain several deep-chamfered crossbeams, a full cruck truss, and jointed crucks with windbracing. There are traces of cob walling and wattle and daub partitions, along with slightly later additions such as a stone newel staircase, timber and stone cambered-arch doorways, and early fireplaces. It is believed that the roadside portion of the cottage was modified in the 17th century.
