Description

Longcroft is a detached cottage, possibly dating back to the 15th century, with modifications made in the centuries that followed. The exterior is of local stone, rendered and colourwashed, with a thatched roof that is hipped at the east end and half-hipped to the west. Brick chimney stacks are also present. The cottage has an 'L' shaped layout and a single storey with attics, featuring an 8-bay north elevation. The windows are casement windows with horizontal bars, of various designs, including 3-light windows in bays 3, 4, and 8, a 2-light window in bay 6, and a 5-light window in bay 7. Smaller windows are set into the roof above several bays. The cottage has boarded doors in bays 1, 2, and 5, with the last serving as the main entrance, set within an older, substantial frame. A matching wing extends from the south-west corner. The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to include sections of cob walling, a through passage plan, plank and muntin partitioning of two types, a 9-panel beamed ceiling in the centre room, two large fireplaces (one containing an oven and a curing or drying chamber), and roof trusses largely composed of jointed crucks.
