Description

The Coign is a cottage, formerly two cottages, dating from the 16th century. It is constructed from local stone that is cut and squared in a random coursed pattern, with a thatched roof on the main section that is hipped at the angle. The westward extension features double Roman clay tiles with a coped gable and rebuilt brick chimney stacks. The building has an "L"-shaped plan and is single-storey with attics, presenting a four-bay east elevation.

The entrance door, which is from the early 20th century, is located in bay 3. Bay 1 has a three-light hollow chamfered mullioned window with leaded lights and no label. Bay 2 contains a four-light mullioned window with elliptical arched lights and a label above it. Bay 4 features a three-light hollow chamfered mullioned window that is somewhat distorted. There are also two three-light attic casement windows cutting into the thatch.

Inside, the cottage has jointed cruck collared trusses with purlins, and no windbraces are visible. These trusses are said to date back to around 1520. The interior includes several 17th-century doors and doorways, with both staircases appearing to be in their original positions and having small square eaves windows. The main beams have chamfers with stepped stops. The Coign is a picturesque and interesting survival of its period.
