Description

The Court House is a manor house primarily from the 17th century, with some earlier elements. It is constructed from local stone that is cut and squared, laid in random courses, with Ham stone dressings. The roof features Bridgwater patent, triple angle, clay tiles between coped gables, and there are two stone chimney stacks along with one brick stack. Originally designed in an "L" shape, the main south elevation has two stories and three bays, with a projecting wing on the left side.

The central porch is coped and gabled, topped with a finial, and features solid sides and a doorway with a cambered arch. The windows are ovolo-moulded with mullions, fitted with rectangular leaded lights and label moulds; the ground floor has a four-light window, while the upper floor has a three-light window. The gable of the projecting wing includes a four-light hollow chamfered window on the ground floor, above a matching three-light window set under a triangular relieving arch. There is a plain doorway with a cambered arch in the east wall of the projection.

At the rear, there is an early stone chimney stack and several mullioned windows, along with a 20th-century rear wing and two lean-to extensions. Inside, the house is said to have jointed cruck roof trusses, some 17th-century fireplaces, chamfered beams, and a moulded stud and panel cross-passage screen. The property was owned by the Bishopric of Winchester from the mid 11th century until the 19th century and served as a resting place for the Bishop's officers attending Assize Courts in Ilchester and Taunton.
