Description
Clarke's Cottage is a Grade II listed building that was originally three separate cottages, dating from the late 17th century. The cottage is constructed of stone, with some parts rendered and colorwashed, and features a thatched roof and porch, along with brick chimney stacks. It has a through passage plan and is single-storey with an attic, comprising five bays.
The porch is off-center in the third bay and has timber sides, protecting an early 20th-century Tudor style door. There is one reconstructed stone mullioned window, while the ground floor has two-light leaded casement windows. Above, there are two three-light casement windows set into the thatch, with the right window being of early date and featuring old leading. The rear of the cottage has more casement windows, and there is a massive timber door frame from the 17th century with a pointed arch, which contains a door from the 18th or 19th century that is said to have come from Shepton Mallet prison. Inside, several 17th-century features can be found, including a fine fireplace with a wood surround in the middle room downstairs.
