Description
No. 48 is a cottage located in Upper Woodford, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with some 18th-century elements. It is constructed from flint, limestone, and greensand, topped with a thatched roof. The rear block features banded flint and limestone, with brick quoins and a tiled roof. The cottage is single storey with an attic and consists of 1½ bays. The front block includes a living room with a stack in the half bay, which now serves as a party wall. It has a boarded door with a glazed panel and timber windows with panes; the ground floor windows are adorned with cambered brick arches, and there is a flush dormer above. The left gable end features a 2-light stone-mullioned window, and the roof is hipped to the left. At the rear, there is a 1-bay block added in 1752 that projects beyond the left gable of the front block, which has a half-glazed door and a canted bay window on its south gable, with a half-hipped roof. A cob stair extension is also present. Inside, the front block may have a central cruck truss, and the reverse assembly of the tie and wall plate is visible externally. The stair is located at the side of the stack, which has a blocked fireplace.
