Description

The gate piers to the carriage entrance and pedestrian entrance to Castle Howard Park, along with the adjoining wall, were likely built in the late 19th century and are made of sandstone. The piers at the carriage entrance are flanked by curving walls that end at additional piers, with a straight wall continuing to the right that leads to the pedestrian entrance. The square-section carriage entrance piers stand approximately 3 metres tall and feature banded-rusticated surfaces topped with a cornice and cushion caps. The wall is about 2.5 metres high, constructed of tooled ashlar with coping stones, and ends in rock-faced piers with domed capitals. To the right, there is a wall approximately 10 metres long and 2.5 metres high, also with coping stones and rock-faced piers with tooled domed capitals. The entrance features 20th-century timber gates. This structure is included for its group value.
