Description

Castle Howard Estate Yard east and south range consists of coach-houses, an implement shed, utility rooms, and a blacksmith's shop, built in the early 19th century with later alterations. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed sandstone and features Welsh slate roofs, forming an L-shape on plan.

The east facade includes a coach-house on the left and utility rooms on the right. The coach-house has a plinth and three keyed elliptical-arched carriage entrances with a continuous impost band and slatted doors. On the first floor, there are two slatted openings beneath wedge lintels, along with gable coping and cyma reversa kneelers. The utility rooms feature a double-leaf board door and a single board door to the left, with fixed windows in the center and flanked by board doors, all openings being elliptical-arched beneath arched lintels.

The south range includes an implement shed on the left, a coach-house and stable in the center, and a blacksmith's shop on the right. The implement shed has six bays, with the first and second bays open, and the third and fourth bays fitted with 20th-century board garage doors. The fifth and sixth bays each have a board door with a divided overlight to the right and a window to the left, with the fifth bay having a slatted window and the sixth bay a fixed window. The coach-house has three bays, with a board door and divided overlight along with a slatted opening under keyed wedge lintels on the left, and keyed elliptical-arched carriage openings with imposts and board doors on the right. The first floor has slatted openings beneath wedge lintels, along with gable coping and shaped kneelers. The blacksmith's shop features a central entrance with a board door and divided overlight, flanked by three-light Yorkshire sash windows, all under keyed wedge lintels. The shop also has gable coping and an end stack to the right.
