Description
The Castle Howard Estate Yard Sawmill and Engine House is a sawmill and engine house built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has parallel ranges beneath an M-shaped roof, with the sawmill on the left and the engine house on the right. It is two storeys high, with gable ends facing the road.
On the left gable end, there is a double-leaf board door with a divided fanlight set in a keyed elliptical-arched surround with imposts. This door is flanked by low openings; the one on the left is blind, while the one on the right is boarded and was formerly used for timber entry. The first floor features round-arched six-pane fixed windows in keyed surrounds with imposts.
The right gable end has a three-bay pedimented gable, with a central gable that projects forward. There are two blind square openings in the outer bays, and the first floor has a tall blind round-arched opening flanked by round-arched twelve-pane fixed windows, all in keyed stone surrounds with imposts. An oculus is present in the gable end.
Inside, the sawmill contains a circular saw that straddles railway lines with two bogeys, originally moved by pulleys, which carried timber from the entrance to the saw. All power for the sawmill came from a steam engine located in the engine house. There is a brick extension at the rear, but it is not of special interest.
