Description

The Engine House and Saw Mill, located in Tyntesfield Park, is a country house estate structure built around 1865-1870. The engine house features coursed stone with red brick details and a clay plain tile roof with gable ends. The saw mill is constructed from rock-faced stone rubble and has a gable-ended roof covered in Bridgwater tiles. It includes lateral and axial brick stacks.

The layout consists of the engine house as the main range on the left, with a cross-wing on the right. The saw mill is situated directly to the right of the engine house cross-wing and is now connected to it. The building is designed in the Victorian Gothic style.

On the exterior, the engine house has a single-storey main range with a glazed ridge-light, a doorway, and a two-light stone mullion window at the front. The gabled cross-wing on the right features a large treble-chamfered pointed arch brick doorway with plank double doors that have wrought-iron strap hinges, flanked by buttresses, and a four-light stone mullion window above in a large pointed arch brick recess. There is a lateral stack on the right side of the cross-wing with a polygonal brick shaft and a moulded stone cap, as well as an axial stack between the ranges with a gabled canopy. The rear gable of the cross-wing has a large six-light stone mullion window and a ventilator in the gable.

Inside the main range of the engine house, the space is open to the roof with a glazed ridge-light. The saw mill features an open tie-beam truss roof. This building is a notable example of a Victorian country house estate engine house and saw mill.
