Description
The South Retaining Walls, Piers, and Central Steps to the Rose Garden were likely built around 1865 by John Norton. They consist of coursed rubble retaining walls with octagonal piers placed at intervals, topped with a pierced quatrefoil parapet. The central area features octagonal piers and a flight of seven steps, which are flanked by side walls that end in lions on their haunches, each supporting a shield. This design was noted in Country Life on May 17, 1902.
