Description

The aviary, located immediately northwest of Tyntesfield House, dates from the late 19th century. It features a timber frame with polychrome red and black diamond tile-hung panels and a brick plinth. The roof is gabled and covered with clay tiles, showcasing bands of scalloped tiles and crested ridge tiles. The structure is approximately square in plan, with a cage at the front and roosting and nesting boxes at the rear. The building is single storey with a two-bay gabled front supported by small brick piers, while the sides are gabled towards the rear and include tile-hung and glazed panels. Notably, the square framing of the front cage is missing on the east side. Inside, there are roosting and nesting boxes at the back, making this a rare surviving example of a Victorian country house aviary.
