Description
Home Farmhouse is a farmhouse located at an estate model farm, built around 1700 and altered and extended in the mid-19th century, with some minor changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed of pink stone rubble and features Bridgwater tile gabled roofs adorned with ornate pierced barge-boards at the gables. It has brick and stone gable end and axial stacks with yellow clay pots. The plan is irregular, consisting of parallel and cross-wing ranges, with outhouses to the left (west).
The exterior is one storey with an attic and presents an asymmetrical three-bay south front. On the right, there are two staggered gabled cross-wings, with the right one set back and the centre projecting. The left range has a small gable over an attic window. All gables feature ornate pierced barge-boards and windows with hoodmoulds, although the windows have been replaced with late 20th-century casements. The rear (north) side has an irregular arrangement of gables, with one set back to the left of centre, a pentice roof surrounding a small yard, and an outshut on the right.
Home Farmhouse is likely the oldest surviving building on the estate and has been transformed into a notable example of Picturesque-style architecture, forming part of an important Victorian planned farmstead.
