Description
Castle Howard gate piers, railings, and end piers are located immediately north-east of North Lodge and date from around 1874, with some later restorations. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar and are square in plan, standing approximately 4 metres high. They are accompanied by curved wrought-iron railings that are about 5 metres long and 1.5 metres high. The end piers are also square in plan and stand approximately 3.75 metres high. The gate piers feature a plain design with a moulded plinth and cornice, topped with a ball finial on a stepped base. The railings, which are set on a low wall, have lancet heads. The end piers include plinths, pulvinated panels on the sides, a moulded cornice, and are also topped with ball finials on stepped bases.
