Description
The gate piers to the central north-south lane of the walled garden at Castle Howard date from the early 18th century and are likely the work of Sir John Vanbrugh. Constructed from limestone ashlar, these piers stand approximately 5 metres tall. They feature pulvinated rustication on the columns, an acanthus frieze, and moulded cornices. At the top, they are adorned with urns that have bead rims and foliate scrolls. The site is included in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission's Register of Parks and Gardens of special historic interest in England, specifically noted as part of Castle Howard, which is designated Grade I.
