Description

The Stables, originally built as stables and now serving as a costume gallery, was designed by John Carr for the 5th Earl of Carlisle between 1781 and 1784. The building is constructed of tooled limestone ashlar with a Westmorland slate roof. It features a stable block, coach-houses, and grooms' quarters arranged around a quadrangle.

The main facade is symmetrical, consisting of two storeys and nine bays, with single-storey extensions at either end. The central three bays are designed in a massive Tuscan order, featuring a tall central arch flanked by round-arched sash windows with radial glazing in their heads. The second and eighth bays have windows recessed in arches. A continuous impost band runs along the facade.

The corner pavilions include squat round-arched sashes with radial glazing, flanked by flat buttresses that have paterae friezes and ball finials, which support a coped parapet with blind balustrading at the center. The first floor has unequal 12-pane sashes. The balustrade over the central three bays features a central panel adorned with swags and paterae, with vases at each end and a central urn flanked by dogs. The roof is hipped.
