Description

The walled garden chimney stack to the former greenhouses at Castle Howard is a Grade II listed structure dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and stands approximately 9 metres tall, featuring a three-stage design. The base is supported by a three-course plinth and has a roll-moulded base. The first stage includes sunk panels with rock-faced rustication and a row of circular flues positioned between modillions, topped by a band that carries a moulded cornice. The second and third stages also have sunk panels with rock-faced rustication and are separated by a band adorned with a circular motif, with modillions leading to the moulded cornice at the top. The greenhouses that the chimney served have since been demolished.
