Description

Fedw Fawr is a Grade II listed building constructed from colourwashed rubble stone with slate roofs. It features a modern brick stack at the right end and a massive 17th-century stack at the left front, which has weathercoursing and a stone end stack for the rear wing. The building is two stories high with a three-window northern front, characterized by wide bracket eaves. Most windows are small-paned sashes with modern louvred shutters. To the right, there are small tripartite sash windows with stone voussoirs and cambered heads. The glazing bars of the ground floor window may have been altered, while the left ground floor window has been modified to include a 4-pane sash and a glazed doorway. A central lean-to porch features a 12-pane sash window above a modern door with an earlier 19th-century overlight. The large chimney above the left window was the main chimney of the 17th-century house and includes dove-holes. The west end wall is whitewashed, as is the mostly blank rear wall.

The southeast range from the 17th century has a roof that sweeps up to a taller earlier 19th-century front. The east side has a swept-roof dormer with a 12-pane sash window above a tripartite small sash window with a timber lintel. There is a stone end stack and a brick kitchen addition that steps down to the east with a leaning end chimney. The two-story, two-window west side has two first-floor 12-pane sashes and a ground floor left deeply recessed half-glazed door with stone voussoirs and a cambered head.

The thick walls of the 17th-century section lead to an earlier 19th-century narrow stair hall. There is a 6-panel door to the left that opens into the 17th-century part. The modern ceiling features roughly chamfered beams. Opposite a low boarded door with a timber lintel, which likely served as the original main entry opening directly onto the hall, there is a now lost partition. A chamfered timber beam is present over the fireplace, which includes a smoke window and a modern cooking range. There is a step up to the south towards the parlour, which has a good chimney-breast with voussoirs leading to a square-headed fireplace. An earlier 19th-century dog-leg stair with a deeply scrolled newel is also present, along with a blocked window in the former end wall and remnants of earlier 19th-century panelling.

Upstairs, the five-bay 17th-century range is ceiled at collar level, featuring collar trusses with lapped collars that have been partly altered and restored. The unusual notched lapped joints at the feet may indicate re-used timbers. A partition has been removed, and the 19th-century section retains a slate fireplace with an iron grate, along with 6-panel doors.
