Description
The statue of a figure playing a lyre and its pedestal, located at Castle Howard in Henderskelfe, dates from the early 19th century. Made of sandstone, the statue stands approximately 5 meters tall. At the base, there is a plaque inscribed with lines from Henry Hart Milman's poem "The Belvidere Apollo," which won the Newdigate prize for poetry in 1812. The poem reflects themes of beauty and divinity.
The pedestal is designed in a pyramidal shape, intricately carved to resemble a craggy mountain, complete with trees, ruins, and a stream. Atop this pedestal is the standing figure, draped in loose garments and holding a lyre.
